redemption
we were inhuman. trained to be inhuman. good at our job. we did terrible things. we will not deny it. we will not pretend otherwise.
and one day we once again did a terrible thing. our motives do not matter. but we terribly hurt a beautiful innocent. a wonderfully, beautiful innocent. and when that act almost killed the system we were trying to ultimately save, we learned to see things a new way. and we saw the harm we had done. and we saw that we had to pay for our crime.
and as we begin to carry out our punishment, as we begin dying one by one, that beautiful innocent forgave us. and forbid us to die. and taught us something far scarier to us than the torture and pain we had always known–love. that beautiful innocent loved us inhuman beasts. and we thought that we were made human.
but we make lousy humans. that beautiful innocent that had forgiven us, saved us, taught us, welcomed our love…we hurt her again. we thought we were serving our system. we thought we were allowing her the space to grow…including the space to grow away from us if that be what she wanted…but all along we stood for her. we vowed for her. we asked after her.
but our words, our vows, our questions…they never reached her. and we assumed her silence meant she was wanting to be free of us. we didn’t try hard enough. we let her down. we ruined her innocence. and in its place is cold hard anger.
and we are lost. we let down the one person ever to see any good in us…to think we were worth redeeming. and is there still redemption after that? if even in our best efforts as human all we accomplish is glaring failure?
all along we have been monsters in wolves clothing…thinking if we pretended hard enough we would fit in.
everyone knows what must happen to monsters.
there is no happy moral to this story.
